Weekend of Improv

On 30–31 August 2025, Improvizza! Malta presented a special Weekend of Improv at Theatre Next Door, featuring two distinct international shows and an intensive workshop experience.

Saturday opened with Love Secrets, an intimate, emotionally charged long-form performance by Simone Ellul and Pierpaolo Buzza, exploring love, vulnerability and the stories couples tell each other. Sunday followed with Otto Mondi, a dynamic ensemble piece bringing together Pierpaolo Buzza, Deborah Fedrigacci, Simone Ellul and Federica Forb for a fast-moving, multi-world improvised experience.

Alongside the performances, Pierpaolo Buzza led The Heart of the Scene, a 10-hour workshop focused on emotional truth, instinct and uncovering the deeper pulse beneath improvised moments.

2024 Edition

  • Meet our 2024 Teachers

    Our 2024 lineup featured Omar Galván, Marta Borges, Alice Rey, Monica Gaga, Jodyanne Fletcher Richardson and Pedro Borges — internationally renowned improvisers and facilitators with decades of collective experience across five continents. Together, they brought a rich mix of long-form storytelling, physical theatre, inclusive ensemble practice and bold artistic exploration to Improvizza! Malta.

  • Inside the 2024 Workshops

    The 2024 edition of Improvizza! Malta delivered an intensive workshop programme with flexible training options ranging from 3 to 12 hours. Participants learned from an international lineup covering Latin American-inspired magical realism and physical poetics (Omar Galván), ensemble “group mind” and organic scene-building (Marta Borges), embodied and socio-political physical improvisation (Alice Rey), confidence, flow and heartfelt storytelling (Monica Gaga), foundational stagecraft for stronger performance and audience connection (Jodyanne Fletcher Richardson), and fast-paced techniques for dynamic, multi-layered play (Pedro Borges), with selected longer workshops culminating in participant showcases.

  • Performance Highlights 2024

    Across four evenings (4–7 September 2024), Improvizza! Malta presented a packed programme of fully improvised shows—ranging from poetic magical realism and intimate long-form narratives to sharp duos, playful metatheatre, and classic shortform mayhem. The week culminated in workshop showcases and a final teacher-ensemble closing performance, bringing the festival’s training and stage work together in front of a live audience.

    The Sabir Project offers a chance to utilise social improvisation as a unique tool to enhance empathy within our society, promoting a new model of united and inclusive diversity. It uses shared foundations as a springboard to encourage cultural diversity through the power of improvisational theatre.

  • We Are All Sabir - Show

    We Are All Sabir is a free-form long-form improvised show that makes the most of common grounds to promote cultural diversity thanks to the power of improvisational theatre. The main aim of the SABIR project is to stage improvisation shows that can contribute to the promotion of intercultural dialogue, taking as a starting point the potential offered by this performing art on a cultural and artistic level. The show tackles political, social and current issues in a spirit of understanding and dialogue between different cultures.

    The first edition of Improvizza! had a stellar lineup of improvisational maestros illuminated the stage. From the unparalleled expertise of Patti Stiles and Pierpaolo Buzza to the innovative approaches of Javier Pastor and Simone Ellul, each teacher brought their own unique flair to the festival. With talents like Jurgi Erquicia, Dorian Mallia, Dani Picó, and Alessio Granato also gracing our stages, audiences were treated to an unforgettable showcase of spontaneous performance artistry.

    The Improvizza! Malta Improv Theatre Festival showcased a vibrant schedule, starting with intensive workshops led by experts like Javier Pastor and Patti Stiles, which focused on innovative improvisational techniques. Highlights included interactive sessions such as "Physics, Magic and Points of View" and performances like "Mythic," captivating attendees with a blend of skill and creativity. The festival culminated in a spirited end-of-festival social, marking a memorable finale to four days of artistic exploration and community building.

    The Improvizza! Malta Improv Theatre Festival presented an array of unique shows that merged theatre with interactive experiences. Highlights included "Maestro™," where improvisers competed in a dynamic showdown decided by audience votes, and "Mythic," a duo performance by Patti Stiles and Pierpaolo Buzza that delved into the enchanting world of myths. The weekend continued with imaginative shows like "What If?" and "An Improvised One-Act Play," each drawing from audience contributions to create spontaneous and compelling narratives on stage.

  • Two Day Workshops

    The Festival offered a series of enriching two-day workshops for enthusiasts looking to deepen their improvisational skills. Javier Pastor's workshop explored the intersection of physics and magic, teaching participants how to incorporate complex concepts like causality and the butterfly effect into scenes that showcased their improvisational 'superpowers.' Over the weekend, Patti Stiles led "The Impro Playground," encouraging advanced improvisers to rediscover the joy of spontaneity and vulnerability on stage, while Pierpaolo Buzza's "Dramedy" workshop focused on blending humor and pathos by emphasizing truth in performance. Each workshop was tailored to develop skills and confidence, culminating in performances that displayed the participants' new capabilities.

  • Three-Hour Workshops

    Th attendees experienced a diverse array of three-hour workshops, each designed to enhance improvisational skills across various levels of experience. From Patti Stiles' "Classic Games," which combined fun and skill-building exercises, to Pierpaolo Buzza's "Game of the Scene" that focused on comedic scene development, participants enjoyed a rich educational palette. Additionally, unique offerings like "Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta-Touch Me!" by Simone Ellul and "Attitude" by Alessio Granato delved into physicality and emotional expression through music, providing innovative approaches to improvisation. Each session was tailored to foster creativity, connection, and technical prowess among its participants.
